Writers on Writing: Top 10 Books for Writers

After mentioning Bird by Bird the other night and positing its permanent place on any of my hypothetical Top 10 books lists, I got to thinking about the other resources I own and have turned to in a million moments of needed insight. So for those of you who are writers, or who are thinking about writing, or have friends who write whom they would like to understand better (haha), this is a good place to start reading. Here, in the order of how many pages are earmarked or underlined, my….

1. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (surprised?)

2. On Writing Well by William Zinsser

3. Understanding English Grammar by Martha Kolln & Robert Funk (favorite textbook ever. period.)

4. The AP Stylebook

5. Three Uses of a Knife by David Mamet

6. Mystery and Manners by Flannery O’Connor

7. Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg

8. The Elements of Style by Strunk and White

9. Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss

10. The Chicago Manual of Style (this is last only because I don’t yet own it. but don’t think for a minute I haven’t gone into Borders or B&N and sat in the floor in the writing aisle and taken notes from it…i know. shameful.)

  1. Ha ha….love you girl. Very interesting top 10. And by the way, NOT shameful on capturing some notes on the fly at Borders. A writer’s got to do what a writer’s got to do! Period. 🙂
